The question was posed: OK, turn about is fair play! I have seen this same question about the Ecuador women asked, in one form or another, a few times, what about the men? I know they are of a macho culture, but how do they behave around women who are alone? For instance, as an example, my daughter and I feel that the men in the Bahamas are too ‘fresh’. Because I lived in Panama for a few years and because I tended to be somewhat outspoken about my observations of life there, I was recently queried by a Panamanian the following: “On foreigners: Ok Leslie, so I will ask you personally. When you said that you would prefer if Americans (not sure if you said Americans or foreigners) would NOT move there, what prompted you to say that? From the first time I visited Cuenca and even more so now, it felt/feels far more like being in a European city than being in Latin America. It’s not just the cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, the abundance of shops and boutiques in town, the large malls, the many suburbs nor modern condos. There’s something else I can’t quite capture in words yet, but sure do feel inside where words are meaningless. (more…)

My first two weeks here have been a bit overwhelming primarily because I brought my 75 pound Belgian Shepherd with me. First, Copa (and the travel agent at Viajes David in Panama) made the mistake of telling me I had no choice but to send her cargo due to her weight. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!! (more…)

I begin this second week thinking about how the wonders of the world famous Geisha coffee are lost on me. Now my son aspires to snobbery in all things consumable, but me? I just love what I love and right now, I’m thrilling on Lojano coffee at $2 a pound. When I left NYC, I was concerned about the loss of great dark roast coffee, great parmesan cheese and access to Yankee Stadium to see games in person. (more…)
